Dear a person,
Within a cycle of seeing, thinking, and making.
From my work with camphor wood (Japanese Kusu)
I work mainly with camphor wood. Camphor trees grow abundantly in Kyushu and have been seen in our daily lives as sacred trees and roadside trees since ancient times.
The camphor tree is rooted to the earth and spreads its branches to fill the sky. The camphor tree is magnificent and powerful. When one looks at its shape, it conjures images .
I carve my characters out of large camphor logs.
When I look at the camphor, I often see the shape of a person inside the camphor. Sometimes I also see shapes inspired by nature, or daily questions or feelings thatI have.
At times, they are visualized on paper as lines of black ink. I feel that the camphor helps me to make it more tangible with its imposing presence.
The large camphor makes me think about the fact that I am a very small creature.
It also makes me realize the preciousness of the connection between people and nature, and between people themselves.
Nature is always like that. It is beautiful and sometimes terrifying. And humans, living in nature as they do, are also part of it.
If we remember that as we live in this world, if we remember that and think and act accordingly, we will be able to live with a rich heart.
I am grateful to be able to feel that connection in my daily work.
Best,
Toyomi Kamegawa
